If you’ve ever eaten a hot chili pepper, then you’re already intimately familiar with the driving force behind the weight loss ingredient CapsiMax – capsaicin. CapsiMax is claimed to be safest and most effective way to take it, but is this for real and is it worth the extra dollar?

CapsiMax Science

Capsaicin, the active chemical in capsicum fruit, is used for a variety of purposes. Applications for this chemical include everything from weight loss to self-defense (think pepper spray), but clearly we’re here for the first.

Capsaicin has been shown to both decrease appetite as well as increase the amount of calories your body burns on a regular basis. Part of this is due to a natural thermogenic effect of increasing your body temperature slightly (you’d be surprised how much of a difference this makes).

However, because this chemical is so powerful, regular use of even “safe” doses has been known to cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and burning diarrhea (yeah, we didn’t think that sounded fun either). CapsiMax claims that by encapsulating this active chemical and releasing it in your system more slowly over time, its version of capsicum extract is safer to use and just as effective. We would love to believe this, but the company has yet to show any specific studies on CapsiMax that differ from regular capsicum extract.

CapsiMax Marketing

The official site and the marketing blurbs elsewhere focus primarily on the already-known benefits of capsicum extract in general. Obviously the effects are great and this product can get behind the same claims as a marketing strategy, but there isn’t any discussion about how this version is really any more effective than more generic capsicum products. This isn’t to say that the “coolest form of red hot pepper” claims aren’t attractive, but we find them rather unsubstantiated.

CapsiMax Price

Products containing this as a primary ingredient have been priced around $50 for a month’s supply. This is significantly higher than other products using more generic forms of capsaicin.

There is no “satisfaction” guarantee available on products containing CapsiMax from what we have seen.

CapsiMax Conclusion

We would really like to believe that this ingredient is significantly more effective than the much cheaper cayenne powder but as it provides no evidence, we are reluctant to say that the slightly diminished side effects are worth the much higher cost.
