With the popularity of the African hoodia plant (a small, rather ugly cactus known to suppress appetite), there are a number of companies looking for similar ingredients to build products on. Caralluma Actives chose a fibrous, succulent plant (cactus-like) which is native to India. There may be some hype about it, but does the science back it up? More importantly, will this particular product deliver on its weight-loss claims?

Though the company does its best to distract us from the fact that it doesn’t actually disclose the ingredient label, this fact did not get past us. The only thing we can tell about this product is that it contains caralluma fimbriata, but there is no telling exactly how much of it or whether any other ingredients are included.

Caralluma fimbriata is known to the the weight loss world as an appetite suppressant because it has been used by rural Indians for this purpose during famines. Given the lack of scientific background to the mechanism of action, it is unclear how exactly this ingredient suppresses appetite but some studies suggest that it does. Even in the few studies where it was shown to reduce appetite, it was not shown to actually aid in weight loss. Furthermore, there is no specific dose known to be effective and this product doesn’t include concentrations.

The marketing is very sly with this product in trying to “hurry” you to try the product without considering whether it really works or not. They only mention a few things about “two clinical studies”, unidentified celebrities using caralluma, and one testimonial. Not the most impressive display, we must say.

At the official website, the company only offers the product via a “free trial” program, though elsewhere it is sold for around $50 per bottle. If you go with the free trial program, the fine print on the website states that “you will be charged $119.93 in 14 days for our Free Refill Program unless cancelled.” This is a dirty trick that some companies use to try to make money off of those who don’t read the fine print.

Though the company mentions a guarantee, what they actually mean is that you can only get your money back if you don’t open the product. This is better than nothing, but is misleading and is by no means a satisfaction guarantee.

Too many things about this product reek of rip-off. This isn’t to say that the company is being out-right dishonest, but just misleading. There isn’t any reason to believe this product will really work or be worth the money for you. It’s definitely not worth getting tangled up in the auto-ship program/free-trial offer.
